How High Gives Back

How High Gives Back

Frequently, new co-workers say their decision to join High was based in part on our continuing commitment to give back to the communities in which we do business. They say their own values are aligned with those of our organization, and that this is important to them personally.

We’re delighted to have so many like-minded people working with us. Across our 11 businesses, we all share a dedication to hard work and the principles of The High Philosophy. Yet to me, our shared commitment to the success of our community stands out and truly distinguishes High, making this a special place to work and build a career.

Power to the People

One of our core beliefs is that business has a role in solving community problems. Rather than relying on handouts, we want to come alongside those in need and help them find their own solutions to the problems they face. Whether it’s a family overcoming the grinding cycle of poverty, or a young person needing a job that brings financial security, or one of many other challenges, people find the bridge to a better future when they learn and use their life skills and make positive change for themselves.

We want to meet them at that place of need and be a catalyst for growth. This we believe is at the heart of corporate social responsibility. We think of this approach as a Bridge to Opportunity, and we have purposeful strategies and partnerships in place to help people see the possibilities and bring them along. A core principle is that all people are created equal and that our role is to help shape a diverse and inclusive world for the next generation.

Investing in Change

On the business side, High Companies invests in the operations of a wide range of community partners, from arts and education to healthcare to community services. Areas of focus are on career and technical education, ensuring that Lancaster can build the workforce it needs with sustainable jobs.

The other side of High philanthropy is High Foundation, a humanitarian organization focused on eliminating poverty by supporting nonpolitical nonprofit organizations through capital gifts. High Foundation works to achieve systemic change with an impact that is significant and lasting.

As Assistant Secretary of High and Executive Director of High Foundation, I have the privilege of being involved in the activities of both these forces for change. Seeing the differences that we have been able to support, such as eliminating veteran homelessness, reducing blight and food deserts in Lancaster City, increasing the readiness of school-age children, environmental conservation, and many more, is one of the great joys of my life.

Gratitude for Co-workers

Like the High Family and High Companies leadership, I deeply appreciate the generous contributions of time and treasure that High co-workers give. More than 150 of our managers are involved in community organizations in Lancaster and beyond. Over the past 10 years, our employees have given more than $2.5 million to improve the lives of our fellow citizens.

I’m proud to be part of an organization that’s bringing about a better future for our community.
